How to Write Etsy Tags That Actually Get Found: A 13-Tag Guide

The tag section is where most sellers give up first, usually because they've already spent their energy on the title and treat the 13 tag slots as an afterthought. Etsy allows up to 13 tags per listing, each up to 20 characters, and each one is matched against search queries the same way your title is. The mistake most sellers make is treating tags as a place to repeat single words from the title instead of a separate set of search terms.

Do not repeat your title word for word

If your title is "Sterling Silver Stacking Ring, Minimalist Thin Band," a tag like "ring" or "silver" adds almost nothing. Etsy already matches those words from the title itself. Tags are more useful when they cover different phrasings: "minimalist ring," "stacking band," "dainty jewelry," "gift for her."

Use full phrases, not single words

A 20-character tag fits a real phrase, not just one word. "Stacking ring" as a tag matches more real searches than "ring" alone, because it matches how people actually type queries: as short phrases, not isolated nouns.

Cover the angles your title skips

Titles have limited room, so they usually lead with material and product type. Tags are where you cover the angles that didn't fit: occasion ("bridesmaid gift"), style ("boho"), recipient ("gift for mom"), or a specific use case ("stackable rings set"). Think of tags as answering "what else would someone searching for this type?"

Skip your brand name unless people search for it

Unless you have an established shop with real search volume on your own brand name, a tag spent on your studio or product-line name is a tag not spent on something a stranger would search. New and small shops should assume close to zero people are searching their brand by name yet.

Watch for near-duplicates across your own tags

"Minimalist ring" and "minimalist rings" both eating two tag slots is a common waste. Etsy's matching handles basic plural and near variants reasonably well, so it's usually better to spend that second slot on a genuinely different phrase.

A quick way to check your work

Once you have 13 tags, read them as if you were a shopper. Does each one represent something you would realistically type into Etsy search, separate from what the title already covers?
